RELATIONSHIP COFFEE

Relationship coffee is sourced from farmers with whom we have direct contact. Our Roastmaster travels to the farms to sample the quality and grade of their coffee, ensuring that the farm is managed in accordance with social and environmental guidelines. Java City and the farmer agree on a price for the coffees and sign long-term contracts. This ensures quality coffee supplies to Java City and gives the farmers financial stability to further invest in equipment and farm resources, while providing a fair wage to their employees.

Guatemala Oriflama

Finca Oriflama is a fourth generation family farm located at 4,500 feet above sea level within the Volcanic San Marcos coffee region of western Guatemala. Java City has developed a direct relationship with this farm owner and both parties benefit from this relationship–Java City is ensured a long-term supply of coffee that meets our stringent quality standards, while the farmer is guaranteed a fair price for his crop and long-term sustainability of his farm.

As part of our direct support, our Roastmaster has enabled the farm to produce higher quality coffee and improved processing techniques through consultation, education and sharing of ideas. Establishing close relationships with farmers has also enabled us to invest directly back into their farms and their communities. Last year Java City launched a flagship project with Finca Oriflama providing a nutritional supplement for the farm workers and their families.

RAINFOREST ALLIANCE

The Rainforest Alliance Certified seal is awarded to small farms, plantations, and cooperatives that meet comprehensive and rigorous standards covering social, labor, and environmental conservation issues. Rainforest Alliance certification combines the economics of good farm production with better trading practices to secure improved livelihoods for farm families, farm workers, and ecosystem conservation. Rainforest Alliance is a nonprofit organization leading international conservation programs.

FAIR TRADE

Fair Trade provides an alternative trade model that aims to keep small farmers in business by organizing them into cooperatives and linking them with coffee importers. Fair Trade rules guarantee that farmers are paid a just price for their coffee, helping them to afford healthcare and education while providing housing assistance for their families and farm workers. The rules and membership of Fair Trade are managed by the nonprofit certification group, Transfair USA.

Shade grown coffee is grown naturally on farms in the tropical rainforest working in harmony with existing trees and vegetation. Shade grown coffee is nestled under a canopy of shade trees that provides habitat for birds and other species, enriches and conserves soil, and in many cases, decreases the need for chemical inputs. Shade grown coffee thereby contributes to protection of natural habitats and tropical forest conservation in countries where coffee is produced.
